Interview with James S. Kelly Author of Magnolia

James S. (Jim) Kelly is a retired United States Air Force Colonel with over 100 combat missions in Vietnam. Prior to his retirement, Jim was Program Director for a Communication’s Program in Iran, working directly under the Shah. Jim and his wife, Patricia own and operate High Meadow’s Horse Ranch outside Solvang, California. All of his novels use Solvang and the Santa Ynez Valley as a setting. Over the past 15 years, Jim and his wife have been active in a charity supporting our troops in forward operating locations, in hostile territory, overseas. Welcome to Nuttin’ But Books. Tell us a little about you and your writing background?

I’m a retired Air Force Colonel with a combat tour in Vietnam. After retirement I became a real estate developer and owned a boutique finance company. I started writing about twenty five years ago and
have published seven novels and an autobiography. The backdrop for six of my novels is Solvang Ca, where my wife and I own a horse ranch.

Tell us about your book?

I’ve always wanted to write a civil war novel. This one, although a love story, emphasizes the disparity in resources both sides have and the major role spying had in the outcome

What is a regular writing day like for you?

4PM to 11PM

How long on average does it take you to write a book?

Six months

What is the usual response when you tell a new acquaintance that you’re an author?

Can I buy one and will you autograph it

What do you do on those days you don’t feel like writing? Do you force it or take a break?

Work around my ranch, play golf or duplicate bridge

What would you do if people around you didn’t take your writing seriously or see it as a hobby?

It would have no effect on me.

Some authors seem to have a love-hate relationship to writing. Can you relate?

I’m finishing a Vietnam War Novel where the main character is shot down near Hanoi and manages to escape his pursuers. Once he’s home, he has to contend with accusations of collaboration with the enemy and the unfaithfulness of his wife.
