I am so excited about your new children’s book, Evan’s Stormy Voyage. Can you give us a book blurb so others will know what it’s about?

Evan’s Stormy Voyage

by Karen Charles

Eight-year-old Evan has never crossed an ocean before.

When his parents tell him they are leaving New York for West Africa, everything familiar slips away in a blur of crowded docks, towering cargo ships, and tearful goodbyes beneath the Statue of Liberty. Soon, Evan finds himself aboard a freighter crossing the Atlantic—a floating world of roaring engines, endless water, mysterious passengers, and adventures around every corner.

At first, the voyage feels magical. Evan explores the ship’s library, watches flying fish skim the waves, spots whales from the bridge, and celebrates his birthday on the open deck, lit by strings of lights. But the journey grows far more complicated when Evan meets Mateo, a quiet boy with secrets of his own.

As storms pound the ship and hurricane-force winds churn the sea, the boys form an unlikely friendship over puzzles, model ships, and long conversations about leaving home behind. Yet when Evan’s treasured airplane kit suddenly disappears, suspicion threatens to destroy the bond they have built.

Far from home and surrounded by the vast Atlantic, Evan must learn that courage is not about being fearless. It is choosing kindness when hurt runs deep, forgiveness when trust is broken, and compassion when someone needs it most.

Filled with unforgettable characters, breathtaking ocean scenes, and heartfelt moments of friendship, Evan’s Stormy Voyage is a rich coming-of-age adventure that celebrates empathy, resilience, and the power of human connection across cultures. Perfect for readers who love emotionally rich adventure stories, this second book in the Evan’s Adventures in Africa series invites children into a world of discovery they will never forget.

Can you tell us a little about the main characters in your book?

The main character in Evan’s Stormy Voyage is eight-year-old Evan, a curious, adventurous boy traveling with his parents from New York to Africa aboard a freighter. Evan is excited about the voyage, but he also faces real challenges along the way—from a frightening storm at sea to learning to handle disagreements, admit mistakes, and forgive.

One of the most important supporting characters is Mateo, the boy who shares Evan’s cabin. Mateo is traveling to Ghana to live with his grandparents. Although the boys begin the voyage as strangers, they quickly become friends. Their friendship becomes the emotional heart of the story. They build a model pirate ship together, explore the freighter, share adventures, and experience a conflict that tests their friendship.

Evan’s parents are another important part of the story. They provide Evan with the security and encouragement he needs while still allowing him to experience the voyage and learn lessons for himself.

Captain Morales introduces the boys to the fascinating world of the ship. Through him, they get to visit the bridge, learn how the freighter operates, and discover what life at sea is really like.

I also think of the ship itself almost as a character. It carries Evan away from everything familiar and into a completely new world—across the Atlantic, through a dangerous storm, and eventually to West Africa’s coast.

What I especially love about these characters is that they offer young readers more than an adventure. Through Evan and Mateo, children see friendship, courage, honesty, forgiveness, and the experience of saying goodbye to someone they have grown to care about. At its heart, Evan’s Stormy Voyage is not only about crossing an ocean. It’s about how a journey can change us.

Where and when does this book take place?

This book is set aboard a freighter making the voyage across the Atlantic Ocean from New York to Lagos, Nigeria, West Africa.

They say all books have at least one pivotal point where the reader just can’t put the book down. What is one of the pivotal points in Evan’s Stormy Voyage?

The first pivotal point in the book could be when the hurricane begins.

Does your book carry a message?

  • Courage doesn’t mean you aren’t afraid. Evan can feel scared, uncertain, or overwhelmed and still keep going. That gives children a healthier picture of bravery: I can be afraid and still be brave.
  • Storms are temporary. The voyage can become a gentle metaphor for difficult moments in childhood. When things feel chaotic or frightening, children can learn that they can make it through and eventually find calmer waters.
  • Trust yourself and keep moving forward. Evan’s journey can encourage children to listen to their inner voice, make choices, and discover that they are more capable than they initially realize.
  • You don’t have to face hard things alone. The story includes people who help Evan, reinforcing that asking for help isn't a weakness—connection is part of courage.
  • Adventure can come from uncertainty. The storm isn't simply an obstacle; it changes Evan and teaches him something. Children can come away seeing challenges not just as things to escape, but as experiences through which they grow.

The feeling I'd want children to leave with:

“I can handle hard things. Even when I'm scared or don't know what will happen next, I can keep going, ask for help, and trust that I can find my way.”

And emotionally, I’d want to leave them feeling brave, hopeful, comforted, and curious—not that storms are nothing to fear, but that they are not bigger than the child facing them.

That could become a particularly strong central message: “Every child has a stormy voyage sometimes—and every child has the courage to navigate it.”

What’s your next project?

Evan’s Gift is the first book in the series, and then Evan’s Stormy Voyage. Coming soon is Evan and Elmer’s Adventures in Africa, which is about Evan and his pet monkey. The next book will be about Evan’s adventures with his dog, Tippy.

Is there anything you’d like to tell your readers and fans?

If you want to write a story of your own, don’t be afraid to use your imagination! You don’t have to know the whole story when you start. Just begin, have fun, and let your characters take you on an adventure. And remember—your story is special because only you can tell it.

I am so excited about your book, Evan's Gift
. Why did you choose this particular story to write?

What I enjoy most is the immediacy. With children’s stories, especially, every word matters. You’re speaking directly to a child’s heart and imagination, often in just a few pages. I love knowing that a

short story can be read in one sitting and still linger, sparking conversations, comfort, or a moment of reflection long after the book is closed.

Can you give us a blurb so others will know what it’s about?

Evan’s Gift is a story about a young boy who faces a simple yet powerful choice. Evan dreams of getting a new bike, but when he sees a greater need, he makes a decision that changes not only someone else’s life, but his own. The story gently shows children that kindness, compassion, and generosity often come at a cost, but the rewards are far greater than anything we can buy.

Can you tell us about the main characters?

Evan is a thoughtful, kind-hearted boy who represents the best of what children can be when they listen to their hearts. The supporting characters, his family, dorm parents, roommates, classmates, and friends, help shape his understanding of empathy and responsibility. Each character plays a role in showing that even small actions can create meaningful change.

Where and when does your book take place?

The story is set in Africa, which is very close to my heart. I grew up at an American boarding school in Nigeria, and those early experiences deeply shaped how I see the world. I wanted the setting to reflect a place where community, generosity, and human connection are essential to daily life. Africa felt like the perfect backdrop for a story about compassion, awareness, and seeing beyond oneself.

Does your book carry a message?

Children learn that kindness matters and that their choices, even small ones, can make a difference. For parents and educators, the book opens the door to meaningful conversations about empathy, gratitude, and social responsibility. It’s especially useful in classrooms and homes as a gentle introduction to social-emotional learning.

Where can we pick up copies of Evan's Gift?

Is there anything you’d like to tell your readers and fans?

I truly believe stories matter, especially the ones we share with children. Evan’s Gift is an invitation to slow down, notice one another, and remember that kindness doesn’t have to be big to be meaningful. Sometimes, it’s the smallest gestures that stay with us the longest.

The warmth of the car’s heater wrapped around Elouise as she gazed out the window, watching the snow clouds gather like thick cotton above. Her blond curls bounced with excitement as she tugged at her velvet dress, ensuring it was smooth and perfect for the performance. This was her moment—the Christmas musical, her solo.

Beside her, Crystal, her mom, adjusted her scarf and smiled, noticing the twinkle in Elouise’s bright blue eyes. “Are you ready, Sweetheart?”

“More than ready!” Elouise grinned, her smile wide and full of joy. The eight-year-old’s energy was contagious, even pulling a small chuckle from her dad, Edward, as he carefully parked the car in front of the school.

“Let’s get inside before we freeze,” Edward said, huddling close to the family as they stepped into the sharp wind that whipped around them. They hurried toward the gymnasium, hunching their shoulders against the cold. Christmas carols could already be heard drifting through the entrance doors, filled with the warmth of families gathering, waiting for the performance to begin.

Inside, the air was alive with holiday spirit. Elouise’s heart raced as the lights dimmed and the music began to play. She stood backstage, her hands clasped, waiting for her cue. When it came, she stepped into the spotlight, her curls bobbing with every movement.

Her voice rang out clear and strong, each note perfect. The audience was mesmerized. Elouise had that rare ability to bring a room to a standstill with the purity of her sound. She sang her solo flawlessly. When she finished, the applause was thunderous. Elouise beamed, her eyes shining as she took her bow.

Afterward, as they left the gym, fat snowflakes swirled down from the sky, transforming their world into a winter wonderland. Edward gently guided Crystal and Elouise to the car, his arms around them as they squeezed together.

The drive home was tense. The roads were slick with fresh snow, and the wipers worked overtime to clear the windshield. Edward kept a firm grip on the wheel, navigating cautiously around the bends. Elouise sat in the back, still humming the songs from the musical, her voice soft as the snow that continued to fall heavily around them.

Suddenly, headlights pierced the snowy darkness. From around the bend, an oncoming car swerved out of control. Everything happened in a blur: metal scraping, tires screeching, and the world flipping upside down. The car rolled once or twice before coming to a crushing halt.

Sirens filled the air as firemen and paramedics swarmed the scene, pulling them from the wreckage. Elouise lay motionless, her eyes closed, her curls tangled and limp. The paramedics worked frantically as they loaded her into the ambulance.

On the way to the hospital, her heart stopped.

Congratulations on your new book, Blazing Upheaval!  What attracted you to the thriller genre?

I was attracted to the thriller genre because it allows me to build gripping tension, keeping readers on the edge of their seats. This suspenseful storytelling creates an emotional rollercoaster that can be deeply satisfying to craft.

Thrillers often feature morally ambiguous characters, intricate plots, and high-stakes situations. That allows me to explore the darker sides of human nature, psychological depth, and the consequences of ethical choices.

Thrillers typically involve a lot of action and dynamic pacing, which can be exciting for both the writer and the reader. The rapid developments and constant twists challenge my creativity and pacing skills.

I like incorporating real-world problems—crime, corruption, conspiracy, or social injustice—into my stories. This genre can serve as a way to make commentary on society or explore fears and anxieties within a fictional framework.

Writing a thriller can be a way for me to channel my own adrenaline, fears, or intense emotions. The cathartic release of tension for both the writer and the reader is a rewarding aspect of this genre.

Thrillers invite readers to solve puzzles, figure out motives, or pre

dict outcomes, making it a highly interactive genre. I enjoy engaging with an audience that’s constantly questioning what comes next.

The thriller genre provides endless opportunities for surprising twists, red herrings, and unexpected reveals. The unpredictability allows me to exercise my imagination and challenge conventional storytelling techniques.

Do you write in any other genres?

I have written a children’s book about my adventures growing up in Africa.

What inspired you to write Blazing Upheaval?

As a former teacher who lived through the Rodney King riots and the Northridge earthquake in Los Angeles, I witnessed firsthand the tumult and the recovery that followed. These events were not just historical footnotes but lived experiences that profoundly affected individuals and communities. The courage, solidarity, and determination I saw inspired me to capture these moments in a way that honors the real-life heroes who navigated through them.
